FREIGHT TRANSPORT OPERATIONS
Vietnam Railways has made significant progress
in transforming concept and mechanism, adapting to the market, enhancing
business marketing and raising the level of freight traffic in competition
with other means of transport. The railway freight turnover increases
over 10% annually (over 20% in 2006). Under the management of VNR,
there is a Railway Freight Transport Company which undertakes all
freight operation all over the country (with more than 100 freight
stations) together with several railway freight transport service
companies to provide door to door, store to store and intermodal
transport services.

VNR has managed and co-operated to invest in the
following fields:
- Storage and yards for loading and unloading railway freight with
B.O.T mode (e.g. Lao Cai Mineral Company has invested in building
yard in Mau A station…);
- Loading and unloading facilities such as cranes, lifting cars
(forklift) which contributing in reducing loading/unloading time;
- Investing in warehouses, yards and loading/unloading facilities
at railway stations; as well as transfer means for block trains;
VNR also has improved and developed new services
such as block freight trains, container train sets… which makes
stable revenue for both directions (e.g. Empty transport wagon reduced
from 40% to 20% for North-South line freight trains). In Hai Phong
- Lao Cai line there are two pairs of container train sets run daily
contributing to the revenue about VND10 billion/year.

There are 14 pairs of block freight trains/week
between the North-South line and contributing to the revenue about
VND120 billion/year.
Besides, international railway freight transport
to China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and other CIS countries is also
